Critiques

Newspaper, yearbook, newsmagazine, electronic media and literary magazine staffs may submit their publications or broadcasts in ASPA's annual overall critique, and students may submit individual entries in the annual individual competition.

J.B. Stevenson Scholarship / Journalist of the Year

The Journalist of the Year competition is co-sponsored by Journalism Education Association and its affiliate in Alabama. The J.B. Stevenson Scholarship is awarded through the Alabama Press Association Journalism Foundation.

Students may apply for both the Alabama High School Journalist of the Year and the J.B. Stevenson Scholarship. Students who choose to apply for both should submit only one application form and only one portfolio.

Susie DeMent Adviser Award / Administrator of the Year

Students may nominate their advisers for ASPA’s Susie DeMent Adviser of the Year Award. In addition to this nomination form, write a letter stating why you think your adviser deserves the award. Advisers also may nominate other advisers. Letters from other students, teachers, administrators and colleagues and a resume may be included.

ASPA members also may recognize the contributions of their principals or administrators with the Administrator of the Year Award. In addition to this nomination form, write a letter of nomination along with letters from students, other teachers and administrators, etc. You might want to include the school’s Freedom of Expression Policy and newspaper articles about the nominee.
